The Shrine Of Remembrance

The Legacy Olive Tree has been relocated to take up a prime position at the Shrine of Remembrance, Melbourne. A giant 300-tonne crane began its delicate task of uplifting the historical tree on 18th November 2002.

The Legacy Olive Tree was initially planted on 7th October 1973 to mark 50 years of Legacy’s service. In his address, the President at the time said “It is fitting that the planting should be done by the man who first directed Legacy’s field of Service in peace towards the widows and children of departed comrades. It is also fitting that this tree should be planted alongside this Shrine, the origins of which he had so much to do with, including the Eye of Light which records each year, the hour, the day and the month of which peace brought an end of World War 1. I call upon Legatee Frank Doolan to formally plant this tree”. Legatee Doolan was the architect involved in the design of the Ray of Light and also was responsible for giving Legacy it vision of caring for the widows or deceased veterans.

The commercial was a great success due to the wonderful diggers that the RSL enlisted for the filming. They were a fantastic group of men and women who generously volunteered their time for the cause. Their performance truly reflected the memory of their ordeals, and deeply affected all that were involved in producing the work.
